Art 1800: Narrative and Representation

Unit 1 Assignment: Re-Presenting the Past

My project was based on the Abolitionist movement and focuses on the modern-day issue of prison slavery. Throughout the piece are multiple symbols and motifs conveying the issue, such as the chains, ripped up 13th Amendment, gun covered in blood, and hands. The artwork also references how minorities are often a target, the war on drugs, the Black Lives Matter movement, police brutality, and the mistreatment of those in the prison system. 

Assignment 2: Chronicling the Present

I appropriated Jayla Momon's zine "Rock Guideline to Art" because it related very well to the subject matter of my art book. I did not necessarily make a specific type of book, but I based my book off of an everyday object, a necklace. I chose to do this because while looking at the art books in the UNT library, I was inspired by a book shaped like a raven that contained Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Raven". My Art book was based on the short story "The Necklace", by Guy de Maupassant so I wanted the story to be within a necklace. I rewrote an abridged version of the tory.
