Art 1700: Space (Physical, Temporal and Virtual)

A Few of My Favorite Things

Although it is seemingly cluttered, this collage represents me in that my thought process is often "cluttered". I am always thinking of something, whether it's a new design or the plot of a newly finished book, so my collage, like my personality and mind, is not simple. I have a love for elegance and anything antique, as most of my collage is made up of items various items given to me from generations of my family, such as the porcelain doll, pearls, cameo, and perfume. Pink and gold are some of my favorite colors. I like a warm and cozy atmosphere that not only gives a sense of nostalgia, but also an idea of history. My hobbies included are sewing, embroidery, styling, and reading. I love to read older books or books written of the past. Overall, I tend to gravitate towards a fancy, sophisticated, and historical style.

Deep Maps

My nonsite contains two quilted shackles, handsewn with various pieces of fabric. The contrasting patterns of the many fabrics represent the contrast and irony of the idea of "Freedom", in our nation's history. The chains were made with fabric that resembled dark and light skin tones. This was because I am mixed race and I often felt pressured to choose one race over the other growing up, but the many threads in-between, not only represent the conflicting connection with my backgrounds, but the idea that I can break free from the many stereotypes placed on people of my ethnicity. This piece also represents how far I have come in my education, compared to those who came before me. The quilted aspect of this piece is an allusion to my own family's history and culture, as quilting was history popular between African American families, including my own.

Illusionistic Space

I have achieved 3D illusion with the use of perception and value. To achieve 4D illusion, I have used variations of line to convey a sense of time and progress. This is especially noticeable with the sketched quality of the mirror, increased shading and variety of marks in the birdcage, and intense value and depth in the boxes. The birdcage initially contained a flower but it now contains an apple, conveying the idea of change and time.

Architecture & Memory

"Royal Dreams"

This piece is a replica of a castle-like manor that I could see from a bridge in Southlake. I used to wish that I lived in this castle and dream that one day I would own a house like that. Behind the castle is my bedroom because that was where my dreams flourished. While the castle sparked my imagination, my room was where my thoughts would take place. For this reason, I wanted to put more detail in the bedroom, rather than the castle itself. I chose not to add any walls but rather windows because windows where another gateway to my imagination. When looking out different windows throughout the day, sometimes I imagine I am in a different time period, country, or situation. I chose to add a red light because I have a pink light in my room and I felt that it gave my piece a bit of a mystical atmosphere.

World Window

wa, ba, tokoro & ma

My piece illustrates the Japanese concept of Ba, the idea how knowledge is shared within a space. It focuses on language and the idea that when we learn a language, we will be able to further connect with more individuals, however; we often do not continue learning a language or strive to become fluent in another besides English, especially in contemporary American culture. My piece was based on the fact that I took classes throughout middle and high school in Spanish, Chinese, and French, yet I am still only fluent in English. The pieces of paper in a language besides English appear torn and aged because the knowledge of a language can fade as time continues. Although it is not very visible, the languages that I started learning longer ago, Spanish and Chinese, are more faded than French and Japanese. Every single piece of paper says my haiku based on Ba, but the Haiku in English looks newer because I am still fluent in English and continue to learn new words. The embroidered ribbon reads "Ba|Knowledge", and represents the effort it takes to learn and gain knowledge and how it can connect a plethora of people, cultures, and ideas.

Semiotics of Space

This piece is called "Supposed to be Birthday" as it serves as an indication of my birthday and the day it was supposed to fall on. The tiara on the piece is based on a tiara that I have worn for almost every single birthday sense I can remember. It is surrounded with Autumn leaves because I was born on Oct. 5th. The birthday cake is a further indication of a birthday; However, there is a candle with smoke flowing in the air and within the smoke are Christmas presents. This is evidence to my due date, which was Dec. 23rd. The overall piece is an index that serves as evidence for the fact that I was born 3 months early and what was supposed to happen and did not.
